History of Hunter, Kansas
Over the years, local people have referred to “Old Hunter” as being located 4 miles west of the town’s current site. The history behind this is linked to Al Hunter who actually did live west of the community. As an early settler, he started a mercantile business, which soon became the location of one of the district post offices named “Hunter.” Other families also established themselves around the mercantile and the post office. Somewhat later, in 1894, the Throwbridge Post Office was started on what is now (present day) Hunter City land, by its owner N.B. Throwbridge. In those days, most mail came to Beloit by train and then was sent out to the district post offices. For whatever reason, the carriers seemed unfamiliar with the Throwbridge location, and letters destined for that location often were delivered to the Hunter location. |
